After a long, wet spring here in Steamboat, summer seems like its finally taken hold. Its warm and dry and green as hell with all the moisture we got this spring.

In news around the homefront, Emily and I are just about complete with a total backyard overhaul that has transformed our formerly sloping, grass-covered space into about 1000 square feet of hardscape complete with a firepit, picnic table, and over 250 new perennial plants, bushes, and trees. Its wonderful!

Here are a few pictures taken with my phone to give you an idea of the magnitude that encompassed this project.

Newly laid flagstone out the back door

New beetle kill picnic table to enjoy a meal with friends

Newly mulched in perennials

Cozy sitting area around our fire pit

Flagstone path around the house - new perennial flower beds on each side

Mega boulders!

Perspective comes from how you view a situation. Is the glass half full or half empty? Tonight I realized that the date on the calendar indicates that the winter is half over. However, that seems so depressing and negative for die hard snow enthusiasts. Instead, I’d like to think of the winter as half full. We’ve been in a bit of a winter low, but the forecast indicates that snow is on the horizon.

At every opportunity possible, I’ve been joining Clint for backcountry snowmobile access skiing on Buff Pass. Here are a few pictures from last weekend’s adventure.

Enjoying laps on Fats

I have affectionately named this snowmobile - Orange Crush

My skis took a break between laps while I drove the snowmobile.

Snowmobiles also make great places to take a break and enjoy lunch!

It’s been dumping for nearly 48 hours. In it’s wake this storm, which isn’t done yet, has dropped 16 inches in the past 24 hours and 25 inches in the past 48 hours.

Another new development at the guest house is that Clint bought into a snowmobile co-op with 4 other partners. This affords him the ability to use the sleds to go up to Buffalo Pass and ski the backcountry. We were lucky enough to do this in the past week and now have pictures to prove it. This was the first time that I have ever been on a snowmobile, let alone drove one, towed people on one and got to ski Buff Pass without paying hundreds of dollars to do so with Steamboat Powder Cats.

More pictures and stories to come…but for now, enjoy!

If you have been following the weather in Colorado and Steamboat in particular, then you know that it’s been snowing non-stop in December. The lasts few guests that we have had at the guest house have really hit the powder jackpot. It seems like the storms just keep rolling in. And with it, people are starting to realize that Winter is here! Our nights are really starting to fill, all except March, but my guess is that people just aren’t there yet, thinking about spring skiing that is. They want to focus on the big dumps of snow that are ahead and the epic powder days that have yet to come. There is still one sweet 5-day stretch of time available in late January which would be perfect….zero lift lines, soft deep snow and a quiet mountain town.

Clint and I are excited to be home for the holidays. No family in town, nothing to worry about except skiing, relaxing and likely snowblowing and shoveling. We’ll post pictures as soon as we can…it’s definitely shaping up to be an amazing winter. I think I am starting to sound like a broken record.

Happy Holidays to you and your family and best wishes for health and happines in the New Year! Bring on the snow!

There is no denying that we have received a ton of new snow lately. The cold temps have definitely kept the snow crispy and fresh. It seems like we get new snow each day, a few inches here and there. This season is definitely shaping up to be a good one. Clint and I went on an out of bounds adventure with two of our friends in an effort to stay warm by hiking and moving. It was so cold out that when I took off my glove to film this video, I didn’t even realize that my frozen thumb was over the view finder - oops!
